ONKOLOGIKOA CREATES A CHRONIC PAIN UNIT

Chronic pain unit

Dealing with cancer means also coping with the physical pain involved. Advances in oncological treatments improve day by day the care provided to patients, turning an oncological patient in a chronic patient. Between 30 to 50% of cancer patients experience severe or moderate pain, and between 75 to 95% of people with advanced cancer suffer a pain that has disrupted their quality of life.

Some pains may be controlled by the GP. The problem is to control pain in a way which does not affect the quality of life perceived by patients.

To this end, Onkologikoa has created a new unit made up by anesthesiologists who will work as a team with internal medicine doctors and oncologists.

Besides the medicines (oral, transcutaneous and parenteral treatment), many other techniques may be applied to relieve pain – surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, nerve blocks, radiofrequency, catheter near the spinal chord or intracerebral catheter, psychological therapies, physiotherapy, relaxation techniques, application of local heat or cold, etc. Equally, the treatment will be complemented by a physical and psychological examination. This professional help reassures the patients, for this is a very emotionally demanding illness

This service is provided to any patient, medically treated or not in our facilities.
