OESOPHAGUS
INTRALUMINAL BRACHITERAPY
We use a
high activity source Ir192 (+-10 Curios) which is moved inside
a 6-12 mm plastic probe introduced in the oesophagic lumen.
We manage to administer a high
dose of radiation to the tumour from inside the oesophagic
lumen, with a minimal radiation of the neighbouring organs.

Technique:
- Without anaesthesia.
- Oesophagoscopy guided by fluoroscopy to place the probe
passing through the stricture produced by the tumour.
- Tridimensional XR reconstruction and then dosimetry in the
planning system.
- The dosage is calculated to 0.5 cm from the surface of the
oesophagic probe.
Indications:
It is used as a complement to
the treatment with external radiotherapy in oesophagic tumours
of all levels.
It is applied as a palliative
treatment in advanced tumours with oesophagic endoluminal
strictures.
Observations:
- 6h of fasting conditions.
- No anaesthesia.
- Total time for the procedure 30-45 min.
- Out-patient treatment.
Team:
- Radiotherapist.
- Endoscopist.
- Physicist.
- Oncologic nurse team.
