Early detection programme – Screening


This programme is organised by the Basque Government Health Department.

General Objective:

To discover breast cancer at the earliest possible stages in order to diminish mortality and to increase the quality of life of the affected patients applying a greater number of conservative or non-mutilant treatments.

Basis:

- Target population: Basque Country, woman 50-64 years old.
- Technique: Bilateral mammography in double projection.
- Periodicity: Twice a year.

Starting date:

-February 1.997.

Population:

The Instituto Oncológico collaborates with the two Early Detection Units in Gipuzkoa and as an Assistance Unit. The patients who belong to the sanitary areas of Tolosa, Bidasoa and Gipuzkoa are the ones assigned to the Instituto Oncológico.
