I131
is a radioactive element that releases beta particles and
gamma rays. This means that it can be used both in the obtaining
of images and in therapeutic.
We treat
both bening and malignant thyroid diseases with I131.This
isotope enters the thyroid in order to take part of the hormone
produced in it and radiates it from the inside without having
to turn to external radiotherapy.
If the administered
dose is low, the patient can lead a normal life or be precocious.
If it is a high dose the patient must stay in hospital. The
room is plumbed and the washbasin and lavatory drain are taken
up in a special sewer where they are left to extinguish until
disposal.
Visits are
limited but not banned. The hospitals staff takes care
of these patients as they do with the rest of the patients.
The only difference is the radiologic control they are subjected
to, because it indicates the moment to release the patient
from hospital.
